Make Your Own Beeswax Lip Balm

Lip balms and other lip products can be very expensive, and most lip balms contain ingredients that you don’t want in your cosmetics. You’ve probably heard the phrase, “If you can’t eat it don’t put it on your skin.” Making your own beeswax lip balm will allow you to be your own quality control department. You can use all natural ingredients and add scents and flavorings to make it all your own. You can even customize batches to suit the tastes of family and friends. Personalized lip balms make excellent gifts for birthdays and holidays.

General Ingredient List

  • 1/2 Ounce of Cosmetic Grade Beeswax Beads
  • 1 tsp honey or coconut oil
  • 1 drop vitamin E oil
  • 2 drops essential oil
  • Choosing Quality Beeswax
  • Not all beeswax is created equal. Purchase beeswax from a pure, raw, local honey producer for the best quality.
  • Melting the Beeswax

First you will melt the grated beeswax or beads. Melt on very low heat in a double boiler or in a heat-proof container in the microwave in 20-second intervals. Stir often until completely melted. Once the beeswax is melted you will add you choice of oil or honey and let it cool slightly. Coconut oil is commonly used but there are many other oils that work just as well. Your choice of oil is a personal one that you can achieve by trial and error or simply using different recipes.

Any of the following oils will make exceptional lip balm:

  • Pure Lanolin
  • Coconut Oil
  • Sweet Almond Oil
  • Olive Oil
  • Shea Butter
  • Cocoa Butter

Essential Oils

  • Add 1 drop of vitamin E and 1- 2 drops of an essential oil of your choice. Stir thoroughly.
  • Vitamin E is a preservative and is also thought to have healing properties for your skin.
  • Be sure to use the vitamin E. It’s a preservative and the lip balm will go rancid after a few months if you don’t use this.
  • This is where the fun and experimentation begins. The possibilities are endless regarding different scent and flavor combinations.
  • If you want your lip balm to have color you will need to decide which method is right for you. Simply adding a few drops of food coloring will give your beeswax lip balm a slight tint.
  • Organic herbs can also be used to naturally tint lip balm. If you choose this method you will need to add approximately 1/8 tsp of a powdered herb or spice with the beeswax in a double boiler until well blended. Then follow with the other oils, flavorings and scents. Turmeric, beet root and paprika turn out nicely because of their intense colors. The correct ratio is 1 drop of Vitamin E and 2 Drops of the essential oil that you have chosen for scent or flavoring.
  • Add 1 drop of vitamin E and 1- 2 drops of the essential oil of your choice. Stir thoroughly.
  • Try different essential oils such as lavender, peppermint, tea tree, lemon, tangerine and others, for scented beeswax lip balm. See below for a list of oils considered safe to add to lip balm.
  • Mix together combinations of different essential oils that you like for a tailored scent.

Checking Consistency

Add a bit more beeswax if the balm looks too soft. Place a few more drops of vitamin E oil in the mixture if it looks too hard. Stir again.

Molding the Beeswax Lip Balm

You can use plastic lip balm tubes or metal lip balm tins. Both can be purchased at your local craft store or through many online craft outlets. If you are buying in bulk online outlets would probably offer better pricing.

Place your clean, dry containers in a plate or baking dish to catch any accidental spills. Pour the melted lip balm into containers being careful not to overfill. Work as quickly as you can to avoid the mixture from setting up before you are ready. Any medicine dropper works best when filling the small tubes. After mixture cools for approximately 1 hour you should use it as you would any lip balm.
